Pep Guardiola has described 18-year-old Manchester City starlet Phil Foden as a ‘huge talent’ and an ‘England Diamond’ who is ready to compete with the more senior and established players in the Man City squad.
Guardiola’s praises of Foden came after his brilliant showing in City’s Champions League last group stage match against Hoffenheim – his first European start of the season.
Although, Foden did not get on the score-sheet, he was instrumental in helping City come from behind to win the match after falling behind to an early goal from a Kramaric penalty kick. A brace from Leroy Sane gave City a 2-1 win.
Foden’s appearances hitherto had been mainly in the EFL cup, but his manager said he never had any fears about his ability to shine on the big stage.
“He’s an outstanding young player, England has a diamond,”
“He played like a man, a real man. Phil was incredible the way he played in the second half. It’s not just the quality he has with the ball. He looks skinny, looks like he’s not strong but he’s really strong.”
“He was incredible. We don’t have any doubts about his quality. He has to compete with David Silva, Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin de Bruyne, but he can do everything.
“He is a fighter, can score goals, has the body shape. He is only 18 years old. We didn’t have any doubts that he can play at the top level.”
