Anthony Joshua has sent a strong message to the rest of the boxing heavyweight division, boasting ‘none of these heavyweights are on my level’.
The WBO, IBF, and WBA heavyweight champion, who was speaking ringside after the weekend’s match between Dillian Whyte and Dereck Chisora, also had a strong message for Deontay Wilder, telling the American to get serious about becoming undisputed by fighting him, otherwise, he, Joshua, will be happy to fight Dillian Whyte instead.
Whyte called Joshua to the ring, asking to get a shot at his titles on April 13 at Wembley – a request he’s now very likely to have granted if Joshua’s talks with Wilder come to nothing.
“Whyte has proved himself,” Joshua said in response. “Everyone knows what we need to do. I need to fight Deontay Wilder for the belt.”
Joshua also spoke about Tyson Fury, Wilder and the heavyweight division in general:
“You know what I found interesting? I heard Fury’s trainer say he needs a break. He’s just come back.
“Now I think Deontay Wilder is in a sticky position, because he was trying to freeze me out. Now he’s in a sticky position.
“I’m ready, but look, I’m proud of what Dillian has done.
“Dillian over [Jarrell ‘Big Baby’ Miller]? In my opinion, he deserves it. He’s fought the tougher, stiffer competition.
“You’ve got to give it to the man who has worked his way up the rankings, if it’s not Wilder or Fury. Why not Dillian?”
“Dillian is an idiot, you know.
“You know why? I showed him some respect. I just told him straight ‘Dillian, I knocked you out clean when we fought, but let’s forget about that, because we’ve both developed, so let’s prove who is a better fighter now’.
“If Deontay Wilder ain’t serious, and he’s going to fight Tyson Fury and he doesn’t want to become undisputed, Dillian you’ll get a shot.
“He starts piping up, so I said ‘alright, cool’. I’m quite respectful, but if Dillian steps in the ring with me, trust me, you best believe me, none of these heavyweights are on my level.
“I keep my lid on it, because I don’t want to explode on none of them, but I do that business in the ring, and if Dillian’s serious, he can come get this work as well.”
