Barca captain Lionel Messi believes his club team-mate Ousmane Dembele is a phenomenon who has the potentials to be amongst the game’s elites.
The young French International has finally started showing all the footballing abilities that convinced Barcelona to shell out £135m to bring him to the Nou Camp from Borussia Dortmund, last summer.
A combination of injuries and disciplinary issues, resulting in poor form last season, had cast doubt over his long-term future at Barcelona and, as a result, he had been linked with moves to some top European clubs, notably Liverpool and Arsenal.
However, Dembele has turned his form around this season, already scoring 10 times, and his superstar team-mate, Messi, has put that down to his undoubted talent and a change in attitude.
Speaking to Marca, Messi said:
“On the pitch he is a phenomenon. And it depends on him. He has all the opportunity in the world to do what he wants. He can be one of the best.
“On the other hand, he’s a young guy who is adapting to the city and the club. The less you speak about it, the better.
“It’s necessary to leave him so he can be calm. He has already realised his mistakes and has rectified them.
“We are going to help him focus on football.”
